No Or Non: Which One Is The Prefix

Non- is a prefix. No- is not.

Non- descends from Latin non, meaning not, and it attaches to a complete word to reverse it. Nonstop is stop with non- in front. Nonfiction is fiction reversed. Nonsense is sense negated. Strip the non- and a real English word remains every time.

No- does not work that way. Take the first two letters off note, north, nozzle or nostalgia and nothing usable is left. Those words simply begin with N and O, in the way that nose and nomad do.

The test takes one step. Remove the first three letters and read what is left. Stop, sense, fiction and profit are all words, so the prefix is non-. Te, rth and zzle are not, so there is no prefix at all.
